The European Commission plans to propose the opening of the first negotiation “cluster” for Ukraine as part of the EU accession process in mid-June.
This is reported by Euractiv.
According to the publication, the European Commission will present a corresponding proposal on June 16 during a meeting of European ministers in Brussels within the framework of the General Affairs Council.
After that, EU leaders can finally approve the decision at a European Council meeting, which will take place in two days.
It is expected that other negotiation “clusters” for Ukraine and Moldova will open in July.
The EU accession negotiation process consists of six “clusters” covering different areas of EU legislation and standards. The first cluster concerns the foundations of democracy, the economy and the institutional system.
The opening of each stage of negotiations requires unanimous support from all 27 EU member states.
The publication notes that previously, Ukraine’s progress towards the European Union was blocked by Viktor Orban’s government in Hungary. However, after the change of power in the country, the new Prime Minister Peter Magyar is demonstrating a more compromising approach to Ukraine’s European integration.
