The EU has scheduled another meeting due to sanctions against Russia: what is hindering the decision

The EU Permanent Representatives Committee will hold an additional meeting on September 22 to extend personal sanctions for violating Ukraine’s territorial integrity. The key issue is the duration of the restrictions and the possible removal of two Russian oligarchs from the list.

This is reported by “European Truth” with reference to several European diplomats.

According to the publication, the written procedure on the Irish Presidency’s compromise proposal has been extended until 6:00 p.m. Kyiv time. The Coreper meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.

One of the interlocutors emphasized that this time the decision to extend the sanctions regime should be made in any case. At the same time, it is still unclear for what period.

If all 27 member states support the compromise proposal, the sanctions could be extended immediately for 36 months .

At the same time, they propose removing Russian oligarchs Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from the sanctions list.

This point has become the main obstacle to the final decision. Latvia has already publicly stated that it does not agree to the removal of Usmanov and Fridman from the list. The continuation of the sanctions requires unanimous support from all EU countries.

If the compromise is not supported by Latvia or other states, another temporary extension of the current regime remains a possible option – for a week or a month.

This will give EU countries additional time to find a final solution, in particular before the European Council summit scheduled for October 15-16 .

The current sanctions regime applies to individuals and companies that the EU considers responsible for undermining the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.

The list includes Vladimir Putin, Sergei Lavrov, Viktor Medvedchuk, Viktor Yanukovych and thousands of other individuals and entities. In March, the Council of the EU extended these restrictions for six months.

The day before, EU ambassadors had already tried to agree on the extension of sanctions, but were unable to reach a consensus due to the dispute over Usmanov and Fridman.
