The EU officially extended temporary protection for Ukrainians: until what year will it be valid?

The European Union has made a final decision to extend temporary protection for Ukrainian citizens for another two years, until March 4, 2027. This decision will ensure that millions of Ukrainian refugees continue to legally live, work, and study in the EU without the need to apply for asylum.

It is noted that the Council of the European Union has officially adopted a decision to extend the temporary protection regime for Ukrainians who were forced to leave their country due to the war unleashed by Russia. The temporary protection, which has been in effect since 2022, will remain in force until at least March 4, 2027. The decision was made in accordance with an EU directive that allows the extension of this mechanism if the return to the country of origin is dangerous due to war or the threat of mass human rights violations.

Brussels notes that Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has been going on for more than three years, and the security situation in Ukraine remains critical. In view of this, the EU member states have shown unity in the need to maintain the temporary protection regime. None of the countries opposed the extension of the directive , and its mechanisms already cover more than 4.3 million Ukrainians currently residing in the EU.

Thanks to the adopted decision, Ukrainians can stay in Europe legally without applying for political asylum. They have the right to legal employment, education, health and social services, and access to the protection and integration system in the host countries. This allows avoiding bureaucratic obstacles and guarantees stability and security for those who lost their homes due to war.

The EU stressed that member states will continue to exchange information with each other to avoid situations where one person could simultaneously receive temporary protection in several countries. The renewal of residence permits and other documents will be automatic or through a simplified procedure. Thus, for the majority of Ukrainians who already have the appropriate status, the extension will not require additional actions.

By the way, from October 1, 2025 , the Netherlands will more than double the amount of monthly asylum contributions for Ukrainian refugees .
