The European Union has transferred the first defense tranche of 3.9 billion euros to Ukraine as part of a large-scale financial support program. The funds will be used to produce Ukrainian drones, develop the defense-industrial complex, and meet the needs of the front.

This was announced by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

“Ukraine’s ingenuity is at the heart of its success in resisting a full-scale Russian invasion. We want to support that ingenuity. Today, we are allocating the first tranche of €3.9 billion for advanced drone technology to strengthen Ukraine’s defenses. And there will be more to come,” she said.

Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko confirmed that the funds have already been received into the special fund of the state budget of Ukraine.

According to her, this is the first tranche of defense support within the framework of the EU loan program of 90 billion euros.

“These funds will be used to finance priority defense needs – the production of Ukrainian drones, strengthening the capabilities of the defense industry, and ensuring urgent supplies for the needs of the front,” Svyrydenko noted.

The government emphasizes that the funding will help increase Ukrainian weapons production and provide the military with the necessary weapons and equipment.

As reported the day before, the Government approved the procedure for using funds that Ukraine received from the EU within the framework of a special loan to support Ukraine’s defense-industrial capacity in 2026–2027.

As a reminder, on June 25 , the European Union transferred the first tranche of macro-financial assistance to Ukraine in the amount of 3.2 billion euros . The funds are part of a large-scale loan package of 90 billion euros that the EU plans to provide to Ukraine over the next two years.
