Today, July 2, in Yerevan, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced plans for significant trade liberalization during a meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
This was reported by the press service of the European Commission.
It is known that the EU recognizes that Armenia is currently facing increasing external economic pressure. Therefore, the European Union is increasing support to help the country expand trade.
“The recent elections have shown the strength of Armenian democracy. The Armenian people have chosen reforms and a closer partnership with our Union. No country should be pressured for its sovereign choice. That is why the EU is stepping up, allocating 52 million euros and offering duty-free access for 80% of Armenian exports to the EU. Armenia can count on us,” the President of the European Commission noted.
The department emphasized that this support will help Armenian exporters diversify supplies to the EU market, particularly in those sectors that have been most affected by Russian trade restrictions.
After the approval of these measures by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, the conditions for access of Armenian goods to the EU market will become more favorable.
According to the European Commission, they will cover almost 99% of Armenia’s exports to Russia of fresh fruits, vegetables and plants, as well as over 91% of exports of beverages and spirits.
To accelerate trade diversification, the European Commission will send experts to Armenia by mid-July to work directly with producers and exporters.
This will help businesses identify new market opportunities, comply with EU standards, strengthen export potential and gain wider access to the EU single market.
The EU also stressed that it supports peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the further improvement of relations with Turkey. Therefore, the Union will also provide assistance in the areas of transport, energy and digital communications to promote the economic benefits of sustainable peace in the region and the development of cooperation between its countries.
These commitments build on the recent launch of the Interregional Connectivity Platform.
The European Commission also recalled that of the €52 million aid package announced in early June, the EU has already allocated €34 million, and the remaining €18 million will be disbursed in the near future. The total amount of support to Armenia will amount to €288 million.
It was previously reported that the European Union intends to provide Armenia with an economic support package worth 50 million euros amid restrictions from Russia and Yerevan’s deepening cooperation with European partners.
It was also reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan , congratulating him on his birthday. At the same time, Moscow continues to increase economic pressure on Yerevan, introducing new restrictions on Armenian products.
