European Commission Comments on Situation Surrounding Prosecutor General Kravchenko

The European Commission said it is aware of the recent developments surrounding Ukraine’s Prosecutor General, Ruslan Kravchenko. Brussels declined to comment on the situation itself but stressed the importance of Ukraine’s fight against corruption and the independence of its anti-corruption bodies.
European Commission spokesman Guillaume Mercier made the announcement during a briefing in Brussels.
“We are indeed aware of the latest developments. But, as you know, we do not comment on individual cases,” he said.
At the same time, Mercier emphasized that the EU adheres to zero tolerance for corruption. For Ukraine, combating it remains one of the key conditions on the path to joining the European Union.
According to him, it is not only about investigating corruption crimes and punishing the guilty but also about preventing them and upholding the rule of law.
Separately, a European Commission representative emphasized the independence of Ukrainian anti-corruption bodies.
“Independent anti-corruption bodies are the cornerstone of the rule of law in Ukraine. As a future member state, Ukraine must guarantee their protection, and they must be able to properly carry out their work,” Mercier said.
He was also asked how the EU perceives the emergence of a number of high-profile corruption cases in Ukraine.
Mercier noted that the investigation of high-level cases also shows that anti-corruption authorities in Ukraine are working and can investigate such cases.

After that, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed to the Verkhovna Rada, asking it to immediately support the resignation of Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko.
The Anti-Corruption Center announced that Kravchenko had left Ukraine. He said he was outside Ukraine on a business trip.
It later became known that Kravchenko went on a five-day business trip to Paris. The purpose of the trip was stated to be participation in a hearing of the PACE parliamentary network.
