European Commission spokeswoman Paula Pinheau commented on reports by some media outlets about the alleged postponement of the presentation of restrictive measures and denied information about a delay in preparing a new package of sanctions against Russia.
This is reported by The Guardian .
According to Pineau, the European Commission has never announced a specific date for the presentation of the new package, so there is no reason to talk about a delay.
“We have seen reports of a delay, but in fact we have never announced a specific date, so we do not see any delay, right? Discussions are ongoing to prepare a robust package of measures that will be presented as soon as it is ready,” Pinhou stressed.
Meanwhile, EU officials announced the day before that the presentation of the new package, which was expected this week, would be postponed, raising speculation about possible discussions within the EU.
According to diplomatic sources, the new package is likely to include sanctions against a number of Russian banks, restrictions on the so-called “shadow fleet” of tankers that Moscow uses to circumvent international sanctions, as well as mechanisms to prevent their circumvention schemes in third countries.
The European Commission emphasizes that the main priority is the quality and effectiveness of measures, not the speed of their adoption. Thus, Brussels seeks to prevent Russia from using loopholes to maintain access to global markets and financial resources.
Earlier it was reported that the progress of the next set of restrictions against Russia unexpectedly slowed down in Brussels . The 19th package of sanctions, which was supposed to be presented on September 17, was removed from the agenda. The European Commission has not yet announced a new date.
Recall, Donald Trump previously stated that he was ready to move to the second stage of sanctions against Russia for waging war in Ukraine.
The United States has once again threatened Russia with sanctions if the Kremlin does not move toward a peaceful resolution. Trump also said that the Russian dictator’s reluctance to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would have “serious consequences” for Russia.
