The European Commission is preparing a “military Schengen”: what will change for EU armies

The European Commission is working on creating a so-called “military Schengen” — a common system that would allow soldiers, equipment and ammunition to move quickly across EU territory without bureaucratic delays. The initiative aims to strengthen the EU’s defense preparedness against a potential threat from Russia.

This is reported by the RMF FM radio station.

The European Commission is expected to present a detailed document on “military Schengen” on November 19.

According to sources in Brussels, the new system should unify the rules for the movement of military units and create a logistical network of corridors covering the roads, railways, airports and seaports of member states. This will allow for the rapid transport of troops and equipment in the event of an escalation of the security situation.

MEP Dariusz Jonski, member of the European Parliament’s Defence Committee, explains:

“Today, European infrastructure is not adapted to the rapid movement of tanks and military columns. Many bridges cannot withstand the load, and bureaucratic procedures can delay the movement of troops for several days.”

The EU is working with NATO on the initiative to harmonize technical standards and remove regulatory barriers that currently complicate the transit of military equipment between Alliance countries.

The idea of creating a “dual-purpose solidarity rolling stock” is also being considered — special cars and locomotives that can be used for both civilian and military transportation within a single transport pool.

Recall that Ukrainian intelligence has data on the Kremlin’s active preparations for a potential armed conflict with NATO.

By the way, space is becoming a key element of the EU’s defense strategy. European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius said that the protection and use of space for defense is becoming increasingly relevant due to the already existing attacks in space.
