The European Parliament has backed the Defense Omnibus, a package of measures to accelerate military production in the EU. The new rules will also allow Ukraine to finance and test modern defense technologies directly.

The European Parliament’s press service reported this.

This includes drones, sensors, ammunition, and other military developments. The EU wants to direct more money to technologies that have already proven their effectiveness during the war in Ukraine.

The defense omnibus should also remove some of the bureaucracy that is holding up weapons production and the launch of new defense projects in Europe.

In particular, EU countries will be able to issue permits for expanding military production more quickly. European companies will also receive simpler conditions for attracting investment in defense projects.

Separately, new rules simplify weapons procurement and the movement of military products between European Union countries.

MEPs explain the changes as a need to quickly increase Europe’s defense capabilities amid the threat from Russia.

The European Parliament believes that Russia will remain a long-term threat to European security even after the war in Ukraine ends.
