Kremlin’s Shadow Over Hungary: EU Alleges Russian Election Interference
Орбан
The European Parliament has warned that Hungary’s parliamentary elections face serious threats to their integrity, citing alleged Russian interference and the misuse of state resources.
Euronews reports this.
Five influential MEPs have expressed doubts about the possibility of holding a free and fair vote scheduled for the coming days.
They called on the European Commission to assess the impact of disinformation, administrative resources, and foreign interference on the electoral process.
The appeal emphasizes that democratic competition in the country is under pressure due to information campaigns and external influence.
MEPs also pointed to possible support for the ruling Fidesz party from Russian military intelligence.
They specifically drew attention to the creation of a network of fake media outlets that spread false information about opposition leader Peter Magyar.
In addition, the deputies mentioned the persecution of investigative journalist Szabolcs Pánya. The publication of materials regarding the connections between the Hungarian authorities and Moscow led to his espionage charges.
MEPs believe that such actions are accompanied by a public campaign of discredit and create additional pressure on independent media.
As previously reported, US Vice President J.D. Vance made a number of high-profile statements about Ukraine and the European Union during his visit to Hungary and also openly supported the country’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban on the eve of the elections.
As a reminder, ahead of the 2026 elections in Hungary, political betting is increasingly reflecting the balance of power and expectations for results. Currently, bookmakers favor opposition politician Peter Magyar.
