On its path to the European Union, Ukraine needs to strengthen its institutions and ensure their independence, ensure the transparency of the legal system and judiciary, and also fight corruption and prevent the persecution of political opponents of the government.
This was stated by MEP Michael Gahler during the discussion of the Commission’s Report on Ukraine in the European Parliament.
“Ukraine and Ukrainians are on the path to the European Union. And therefore, both sides are interested in Ukraine finding its way to Europe,” he said.
“This will be a very clear signal that will also allow us to open negotiations on the next clusters and chapters in the European Council. We know that Ukraine will not return to the Russian Gulag and will be in the European future,” Galer emphasized.
“There are people who have doubts about Ukraine’s path to the EU. But what we have done is we are conducting a dialogue. We are working at the central and also at the regional levels. We are also working with representatives of Ukraine in Brussels. We are cooperating with representatives of civil society,” the MEP noted.
“We understand that there is a lot to be done, there are many institutions that need to be strengthened, and they must also carry out their work independently. The legal system and the judiciary must be transparent,” he stressed.
“We know that the security services are also fighting against enemies. And it should be understood that they should not fight against those who may think differently. It is very important to also fight corruption accordingly. It is very important that there are no people appointed to various positions solely for political reasons,” said Haler.
“We must also make sure that even after the start of accession negotiations, Russia will not be able to conduct any campaigns and actions that would hinder accession,” he added.
“Ukraine is now being strengthened thanks to the talents that are fighting and repelling aggressive Russia, deterring Russia, and therefore it is very important to understand that after this war, Ukraine must work with us. This is in our interests. This will be a guarantee of security. We must work together. We must work together before and after Ukraine is a NATO member state. This is not just about us working with Ukraine, but it is very important that Ukraine will work with us side by side,” the MEP emphasized.
Let us recall that the European People’s Party called for refraining from selective justice, politically motivated criminal proceedings, and illegal personal sanctions against the democratic opposition, representatives of civil society, and independent media in its resolution in support of Ukraine.
As reported, the only civilized way out of the situation surrounding the Supreme Court’s consideration of the sanctions case against Petro Poroshenko is to cancel them. This was stated by the lawyer of the fifth President of Ukraine, Ihor Golovan.
