The European Union demands the lifting of illegal sanctions against Poroshenko – resolution

Європейська народна партія

The European People’s Party called for an end to selective justice, politically motivated criminal proceedings, and illegal personal sanctions against the democratic opposition, civil society representatives, and independent media in its resolution in support of Ukraine.

The EPP is the largest faction in the European Parliament and unites the ruling political forces of the majority of the European Union member states.

In the adopted resolution, the EPP reaffirms its continued solidarity with the Ukrainian people in their resistance to Russian aggression and notes the importance of democracy, the rule of law, the rights of the opposition, and the strengthening of democratic institutions, even during wartime.

The resolution notes the effectiveness of anti-corruption institutions, primarily NABU and SAP, and calls on the Ukrainian authorities to guarantee their independence, ensure the independence of the judiciary, and ensure that court cases are heard without undue delay.

Separately, the document notes the need to continue reforming the Security Service of Ukraine, the State Bureau of Investigation, and the State Financial Monitoring Service in line with European standards. The document also notes that criminal justice mechanisms should not be used or even perceived as a tool of political pressure on the democratic opposition.

The EPP welcomed the opening of the first negotiating cluster, “Basics,” noting that this step marks Ukraine’s transition from candidate country status to a fully-fledged negotiation process for EU membership. At the same time, the resolution emphasizes that the EU enlargement process must remain inclusive, build on the candidate country’s achievements, and comply with the Copenhagen criteria and the existing enlargement procedure.

The EPP notes that even under martial law, Ukraine must ensure the independence of democratic institutions, the principle of separation of powers, multi-party parliamentarism, parliamentary control, political pluralism, freedom of local self-government, respect for human rights, and freedom of the media.

The EPP expressed concern about restrictions on foreign travel for Ukrainian MPs, noting the importance of parliamentary diplomacy for maintaining international support for our country and calling for a review of the unjustified restrictions that hinder parliamentarians from fulfilling their representative functions.

The EPP strongly condemns Russia’s ongoing illegal, unprovoked, and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine. The resolution notes that any genuine peace process must begin only after an immediate, complete, and unconditional ceasefire, and that a just and lasting peace cannot be achieved at the expense of Ukrainian sovereignty, territorial integrity, or the right of the Ukrainian people to determine their own future.

The resolution clearly emphasizes the need to further strengthen military, financial, economic and political support for Ukraine, increase defense production in Europe, strengthen air defense systems and provide Ukraine with reliable security guarantees.

Earlier, the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee approved a report in which it strongly condemned the introduction of personal sanctions against opposition leaders and civil society representatives.
