European Union countries have officially agreed to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians who were forced to leave due to the full-scale war. The status will be valid for another year, until March 4, 2028.
The Council of the European Union announced this on July 15.
According to the Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration of Ireland, Jim O’Callaghan, who currently holds the presidency of the Council of the EU, Europe will continue to support Ukrainians fleeing the war.
“We remain steadfast in our support for Ukraine against Russia’s illegal war of aggression. Today, we have decided to extend the protected status we provide to those fleeing war for one more year, until March 2028,” he said.
At the same time, the EU agreed on new rules for those Ukrainians who will only apply for temporary protection.
In particular, new applicants will be required to provide proof of military service in Ukraine. This may be a passport with a departure stamp issued by the Ukrainian side, or a paper or electronic document confirming service or legal exemption from it.
At the same time, the innovations do not apply to Ukrainians who have already received temporary protection status in the European Union countries.
The EU Council explained that such changes should take into account Ukraine’s needs in wartime and contribute to its defense capability.
As a reminder, Poland stopped funding the accommodation of most Ukrainian refugees in collective accommodation centers on July 1. Some displaced people lost their right to free housing, while support was maintained for certain categories.
As reported, new rules for providing social assistance to the unemployed have come into effect in Germany . The authorities have tightened requirements for those receiving benefits so that more people return to work. For refusal to find work or violation of the conditions, benefits may be reduced or even canceled completely.
