Ukrainian company HIMERA, together with Danish GomSpace, launched the first test satellite OBRIA NANO for the future independent Ukrainian communications network. The device is already operating in orbit and undergoing testing.

This was reported by the GomSpace press service.

The satellite was launched on October 1, 2026, as part of the SpaceX Transporter-18 mission. It is currently undergoing scheduled tests, the results of which will be used to develop a full-fledged Ukrainian satellite communications system.

OBRIA NANO is the first stage of creating a network that should reduce Ukraine’s dependence on foreign communications providers.

According to GomSpace, the satellite will operate under the control of a Ukrainian operator. Its main task is to test the technologies necessary for a future system focused on the needs of the state’s strategic security.

“For us, this project is more than just a satellite launch. It is an opportunity to lay the foundation for an independent communications network in Ukraine,” said HIMERA co-founder and CEO Misha Rudominsky.

In the long term, HIMERA and GomSpace plan to deploy a satellite network that will provide coverage of the entire territory of Ukraine and complement European communication systems.

The next important step will be the localization of satellite and ground terminal production in Ukraine . This should contribute to the development of domestic technologies and production capabilities.

GomSpace CEO Carsten Drachmann emphasized that cooperation with the Ukrainian company is aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s independent communications capabilities and supporting its long-term security.
