Ukraine continues to maintain communication with the Belarusian side, in particular for the exchange of prisoners of war.
Ambassador-at-Large of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Yaroslav Chernogor stated this in an interview with Radio Liberty.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also does not rule out the possibility of a meeting between the Ukrainian leadership and Alexander Lukashenko if this is necessary to save lives or end hostilities.
Ambassador-at-Large of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Yaroslav Chernogor stated this in an interview with Radio Liberty.
According to him, diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Belarus have not been severed, and the Ukrainian embassy in Minsk continues to operate.
Chernogor noted that exchanges of Ukrainian and Russian prisoners of war regularly take place through Belarusian territory. He believes that without clear communication with the Lukashenko regime, such exchanges would be impossible.
At the same time, the diplomat did not rule out that, if necessary, a meeting between representatives of Ukraine’s top leadership and Lukashenko could take place.
“There is a category of values, and there is a category of survival,” Chernogor emphasized.
He explained that during a war, Ukraine may be forced to negotiate even with representatives of the opposing side if this will reduce the number of casualties or end hostilities.
According to the diplomat, such a meeting is not guaranteed to take place, but it is possible if the potential outcome is worthy of such a step.
“If the price of this meeting is worth meeting, particularly for the sake of saving human lives, then anything is possible,” Chernogor said.
