The former leader of Belgorod was eliminated at the front: he went to war instead of a colony

Former Belgorod mayor Konstantin Polezhaev was killed in the war against Ukraine. Earlier, the Russian official was sentenced in a bribery case, but instead of serving his sentence, he signed a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry and went to war.

Polezhayev’s death was reported by Russian media and relatives of the former official. Details of his death are not being disclosed at this time.

Polezhaev headed the Belgorod administration from 2015 to 2019. After that, he worked as deputy governor of the Belgorod region and was responsible for housing and communal services.

In 2024, the court found Polezhaev guilty of receiving a bribe in an especially large amount. According to the investigation, he received two premium cars with a total value of over 18 million rubles from the director of a construction company for assistance in concluding contracts and accepting works in the housing and utilities sector. Polezhaev pleaded guilty.

The court sentenced him to five years in a strict regime colony and a fine of 36 million rubles. However, while still in custody, Polezhaev signed a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry. In October 2024, the court suspended the proceedings in his criminal case, and the former official was released from custody for the duration of his contract service.

According to the Russian publication “Fonar”, Polezhaev died in the Belgorod region. At the same time, other Russian sources only report that he died in the combat zone, without specifying the place and circumstances.
