On Monday evening, French lawmakers voted to dismiss Prime Minister François Bayrou and his government, triggering a political reshuffle.
CNN reported this.
“A total of 364 MPs voted against Bayrou and 194 in favor after he called the vote in an attempt to push through an unpopular €44 billion ($51 billion) austerity plan, which included canceling two public holidays and freezing public spending,” the report said.
The 364 votes against Bayrou far exceeded the threshold required for the government to resign.
Thus, Bayrou will leave his position after nine months in office. According to preliminary data, he is expected to submit his resignation to French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday, September 9.
“Even before the vote, the prospect of Bayrou’s downfall sparked calls for the president’s resignation, despite his promise to serve out his term,” journalists noted.
Far-right leader Marine Le Pen has called for the dissolution of parliament, though new elections are likely to strengthen her party.
An alternative option for Macron is to appoint a caretaker government while searching for a new prime minister, with the armed forces minister and justice minister considered the main contenders for the post.
At the same time, according to Reuters, Macron plans to appoint a new prime minister in the coming days.
