US President Donald Trump said Washington was ready to help Russia after reports of a possible plague case in the Irkutsk region. Russian authorities have not officially confirmed the diagnosis.
CNBC writes about this.
According to Trump, he has not spoken to Russian officials about the situation, but is aware of reports of a possible case of plague.
“This is a disease that we used to be able to control. But somehow these germs are getting stronger and stronger – they’re like an army,” the US president said.
Trump also noted that the United States is ready to provide assistance to Russia if necessary.
The US State Department said it was closely monitoring the situation and urged Russian authorities to share information about the possible disease promptly and openly.
Reports of a possible case of plague in the Irkutsk region emerged after the death of 28-year-old Daria Shipilova , who worked at the Irkutsk Research Anti-Plague Institute.
The woman died on October 2. After that, about 200 people who may have come into contact with her were taken under medical supervision.
Russian media spread several versions of the possible infection. According to one of them, Shipilova could have become infected during a work trip to Buryatia, where a natural outbreak of plague was recorded near the border with Mongolia.
According to another version, she allegedly could have broken a test tube with the pathogen in the laboratory.
At the same time, Russian authorities have not officially confirmed that the cause of Shipilova’s death was the plague. They have called the cause of death “pneumonia of unknown etiology,” and the Russian Ministry of Health has stated that the epidemiological situation in the region remains stable.
At the same time, Russian media reported on quarantine measures in a number of medical institutions and the introduction of a mask regime.
It was previously reported that the White House is monitoring the situation surrounding a possible case of plague in Russia .
