The global diesel market is facing a shortage: how long will supplies last?

The global diesel shortage caused by supply disruptions could persist until at least 2027. Diesel inventories in the US and Europe are dwindling, and fuel prices remain high.

In the US, diesel fuel inventories as of September 11 were 107.9 million barrels, the lowest level for this period since records began in 1982.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) projects that distillate fuel stocks, which include diesel, will remain below the 5-year average through most of 2027.
In Europe, diesel inventories in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp area were 16% below the 5-year average in July. In Singapore, distillate fuel inventories also remained below the 2025 average.
The market expects the shortage to persist through the winter. Factors that could further impact supply include disruptions to fuel exports from the Middle East, restrictions on Russian diesel exports, and possible shutdowns at oil refineries.
At the same time, increased exports of petroleum products from China and high margins on diesel refining could help increase production and partially ease the deficit.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump called on Ukraine to stop attacks on Russian fuel infrastructure, saying the Ukrainian attacks were causing a diesel fuel shortage .
