Ukraine is facing an urgent need to find funding for additional gas imports after large-scale Russian attacks on gas storage facilities. Although 13.2 billion cubic meters of fuel is currently stored in underground storage facilities, this volume may not be enough to ensure a stable heating season. According to preliminary estimates, the country needs approximately 2 billion euros in additional funds.
Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko stated this on October 24 during the government question hour in the Verkhovna Rada, a correspondent for Suspilny reports .
According to the head of government, the necessary amount is planned to be raised from two sources – domestic reserves and international assistance.
“This involves using funds from the reserve fund, as well as financing through the banking sector of Ukraine to support the activities of Naftogaz,” Svyrydenko explained.
The second direction is support from international partners, in particular through grants and soft loans.
“We are cooperating with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank,” she specified.
In addition, Norway has already agreed to allocate a grant of $150 million, and Germany has announced an additional contribution of €60 million to a special fund to support Ukraine’s energy sector. All of this money is planned to be used for gas purchases and winter preparations.
Recall that the Cabinet of Ministers classified the volumes and amounts of gas imports for the heating season .
It was also previously reported that on the night of October 16, Russian troops attacked energy infrastructure in the Poltava region. The gas production facilities of DTEK Naftogaz came under enemy fire.
