On February 24, the fourth anniversary of the Russian invasion, the European Parliament signed off on a €90 billion loan to Ukraine.

This was announced by EP President Roberta Metzola.

“A loan in support of Ukraine in the amount of 90 billion euros has just been signed on behalf of the European Parliament,” the official wrote.

The funds from the billion-dollar loan will be used to provide basic public services, support Ukraine’s defense capabilities, protect “common security and freedom,” and achieve real and lasting peace.

Among other things, Metsola emphasized the need to secure Ukraine’s future in Europe.

As we reported late last year, European Union leaders decided to finance Ukraine’s defense with a loan rather than frozen Russian assets. The EU plans to raise a loan of 90 billion euros to avoid political and financial disputes within the bloc.

Hungary had previously blocked an agreed 90 billion euro European Union loan for Ukraine. Budapest later said it would not support the loan until oil supplies through the Druzhba pipeline were restored .
