The IAEA is sending inspectors after a strike on a nuclear fuel storage facility in the Chernobyl zone.
Ukraine officially notified the International Atomic Energy Agency of a drone attack on the Centralized Storage Facility for Spent Nuclear Fuel in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. The IAEA is sending inspectors to the facility to assess the consequences of the incident.
According to the agency, the impact damaged the fuel reception building. The building’s façade, windows, and doors were damaged, and the blast wave also damaged neighboring buildings.
Director General Rafael Grossi called the incident extremely dangerous, noting that the strike occurred directly next to a facility that stores significant amounts of nuclear material.
According to him, attacks on nuclear facilities are absolutely unacceptable and contradict the fundamental principles of nuclear safety during armed conflicts.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Energy, and relevant government agencies have been involved in informing international partners about the incident.
He emphasized that, as of now, no excess radiation levels have been recorded, but the very fact of an attack on a nuclear infrastructure facility poses a serious security threat.
The radiation situation at the facility remains stable, and specialists continue monitoring and assessing the damage.
As a reminder, on the night of June 7, a Russian drone attacked the Centralized Storage Facility for Spent Nuclear Fuel. The strike damaged the container reception building, but radiation levels remain within normal limits.
