US President Donald Trump has reaffirmed the strategic importance of Greenland to the security of the United States, saying the island plays a key role in countering the growing activity of Russia and China in the Arctic.
This is reported by The Atlantic .
Donald Trump has stressed the need for a stable US presence in Greenland. He noted that the island is crucial to international security and the defense of the northern borders.
“We need Greenland, absolutely,” Trump said.
The President emphasized that geopolitical opponents are actively increasing their military presence in northern waters, which creates new threats to the region.
“Greenland is surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships,” Trump stressed.
According to him, ignoring the activity of competitors in this region could lead to strategic losses for the United States.
“We need it for defense,” added Donald Trump.
Experts say Trump’s stance reflects Washington’s desire to assert leadership in the strategically important Arctic region. Such rhetoric could provoke a reaction from Copenhagen, Beijing and Moscow, although there have been no official comments from other countries so far.
The Arctic remains an area of active competition for resources and influence, and the US seeks to strengthen its control through military and political presence.
By the way, the US has stepped up its intelligence-gathering efforts on Greenland , involving the American spy apparatus, which indicates the seriousness of Trump’s intentions to purchase the island from Denmark.
It was previously reported that US President Donald Trump’s long-standing goal of annexing Greenland to America has moved from rhetoric to official policy as the White House has begun implementing a formal plan to acquire the Arctic island from Denmark .
Recall, in December last year, US President Donald Trump said that the US should establish control over Greenland , which is currently the territory of Denmark.
Trump also expressed confidence that the United States will be able to gain control of Greenland. According to him, the island’s inhabitants, who number about 57,000, aspire to become part of the United States .
As reported, the Greenland government has called a general election amid US President Donald Trump’s renewed interest in the island.
In addition, the Trump administration is exploring the prospect of Greenland joining the United States, even potentially using military measures . “We will get Greenland. Yes, 100%,” the US president said , commenting on the possibility of annexing the island.
