Today, August 29, a state-wide event took place in the village of Markhalivka in the Kyiv region — the official opening of the National War Memorial Cemetery. This space will become the main place of honoring Ukrainian defenders who gave their lives for the country’s freedom.
RBC reports this.
During the opening, the first burial took place. The bodies of soldiers whose names remain unknown were laid to rest with military honors. A separate sector has been provided for them on the territory of the complex, symbolizing respect for everyone who died, even if their name has not yet been established.
The ceremony was attended by the heads of state: President Volodymyr Zelensky, Parliament Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, Minister of Veterans Affairs Nataliya Kalmykova, as well as other government officials and military personnel.
This memorial is not only a burial place, but also a national symbol of memory. It was created as an eternal reminder of the price Ukraine paid for its independence.
The Law on the Establishment of the National War Memorial Cemetery was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on December 8, 2023. The Cabinet of Ministers allocated 515 million hryvnias for the construction and launch of the project.
Currently, the construction of the second stage of the memorial complex is underway – the Ministry of Veterans Affairs recently signed a new contract for 1.2 billion hryvnias.
The National War Memorial Cemetery is not just a piece of land. It is the heart of memory. It is a place where Ukraine honors its fallen, defending their right to eternal glory.
As a reminder, Ukraine commemorates the military and volunteers who gave their lives for the independence and territorial integrity of the state on August 29. The Day of Remembrance was introduced in 2019 by a special presidential decree – the date was chosen in honor of those who fell during the withdrawal from Ilovaisk on August 29, 2014. The symbol of the day was the sunflower – a reminder of the battles in the encirclement among the ripe fields.
