A week before the midterm elections, 54% of Americans believe President Donald Trump has committed impeachable offenses.
This is evidenced by the data of a Politico poll.
This opinion is shared by 81% of voters planning to vote for Democrats, and about a quarter of Republicans. More than two-thirds of respondents expect Democrats to attempt impeachment if they gain a majority in the House of Representatives.
More than 41% of respondents believe Trump has used the presidency for financial gain for himself or his family. Approximately one-third of respondents would like Democrats to primarily investigate his enrichment, while another third would like to focus on his harsh immigration policies.
At the same time, Americans are skeptical about the potential consequences of impeachment. Twenty-four percent believe the new procedure will make Trump more popular, while 18% expect his popularity to decline.
Democratic voters are also divided on the issue: 43% support candidates’ pledge to initiate impeachment even if it costs them votes, while 41% believe it’s better to avoid the issue to win the election.
