The Ministry of Defense has updated the procedure for payments to families of deceased military personnel: what you need to know
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has revised the procedure for assigning and paying one-time financial assistance to the families of fallen servicemen. The changes are designed to provide the families of fallen defenders not only with urgent support, but also with stable funding for many years.
This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Defense.
The department explained that the new rules came into effect on September 1, 2025, and apply to all servicemen whose deaths are officially confirmed after that date. For families who lost loved ones earlier, the payment procedure remains unchanged.
According to the new mechanism, the total amount of one-time cash assistance, as before, is UAH 15 million . At the same time, the money will now be paid in two stages:
- The family receives 1/5 of the amount (3 million UAH) immediately after the documents are processed;
- The remaining UAH 12 million will be paid in stages over 80 months (approximately 6.5 years) in equal installments, which amounts to approximately UAH 150,000 per month.

This approach allows you to simultaneously meet the primary needs of families and guarantee them long-term financial stability.
The Ministry emphasized that the changes take into account the increase in defense spending in the context of a full-scale war and the need to maintain a transparent and predictable system of assistance. The new rules will apply to all units of the Security and Defense Forces of Ukraine.
“The families of our heroes should feel the support of the state not only immediately after the tragedy, but also have a guarantee of stable support in the future,” the Ministry of Defense noted.
Earlier, MP Ruslan Gorbenko reported that Ukraine is preparing an important reform – salaries for military personnel who are not on the front lines may increase significantly . The authorities are already working on new pay standards that will bring them closer to the level of NATO countries.
The day before, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law on the payment of one-time assistance to relatives of soldiers killed in Russian captivity.
