The Ukrainian Ministry of Energy is introducing additional measures to stabilize the power grid, which is experiencing significant strain due to the abnormal heat in Ukraine and Europe.
Energy Minister Denis Shmygal announced this.
According to him, the ministry has already developed an action plan to minimize potential power shortages. Relevant services and energy sector companies are involved in its implementation.
In particular, power engineers were instructed to:
- optimize maintenance schedules for nuclear power plant units to increase electricity production during periods of peak consumption;
- complete emergency recovery operations as quickly as possible;
- put into operation thermal generation equipment with a total capacity of at least 300 MW;
- more actively attract additional generating capacity, in particular, cogeneration units and gas generation;
- use energy storage systems to cover peak loads;
- ensure additional import of electricity from the European Union;
- develop the issue of increasing electricity imports by state-owned enterprises.
Shmyhal emphasized that energy workers are doing everything possible to ensure the stable operation of the power grid. At the same time, he called on Ukrainians to be responsible in their electricity consumption.
“How critical the situation will be depends on each of us. Reasonable electricity consumption during peak hours—from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM—is an important contribution to ensuring a reliable power supply,” the minister noted.
