Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko announced that Ukraine is preparing a draft of a new system of sanctions for traffic violations. However, there is currently no talk of introducing a points system.
This was reported by the Interfax-Ukraine agency with reference to the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
“The authorities cannot help but react to this. Especially since people have already expressed their opinion. The points system has already been launched, but it has not received support,” Ihor Klymenko told reporters on Tuesday, June 9.
According to him, the process of preparing changes is lengthy, and the new sanctions must be clear and transparent for citizens.
“Now we will not be talking about points, but about the operation of the system. For example, for 10 violations, certain sanctions may be provided – withdrawal of a driver’s license, restrictions, or the need to retake the driving test,” the minister noted.
He added that the points system could be the next stage of reform, but for this it is necessary to create a clear and effective infrastructure.
“Together with the National Police, people’s deputies, and lawyers, we will start working on relevant proposals this week,” said Klymenko.
The minister emphasized that the draft proposals are already being prepared, and further processing of the document will be carried out by experts and people’s deputies.
Earlier, ” Pryamiy” reported that a fatal traffic accident involving a Mercedes car occurred in Kyiv on June 4. According to preliminary data, the driver lost control and drove into a pedestrian zone.
The driver himself was also injured. He was detained and placed under guard in the hospital. The man was reported to be suspected under Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – violation of road safety rules or transport operation, which caused the death of several people.
It also became known that since January 2025, the driver has been held administratively liable five times for speeding and fined five more times for other traffic violations.
Deputy Chief of the Patrol Police Department, Oleksiy Biloshitsky, reported that this driver had 39 traffic violations, most of which were related to speeding. Last year alone, there were 18 such violations.
According to Biloshitsky, the situation with the punishment of systematic traffic violators requires serious reform.
