Lithuania said the last day was the “most intense” in November due to the launch of balloons carrying contraband from the territory of Belarus.
This was reported by the LRT publication.
“We probably had the busiest night of the whole of November this month, because the weather probe launches began around 5:00 p.m. from Belarus and continued until 2:00 a.m.,” said Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of the National Crisis Management Center.
It is noted that against this background, Vilnius Airport suspended operations twice – first for five hours, and then the period was extended.
“The closure of the airspace was caused precisely by the long-term scale and intensity of weather probe launches,” Vitkauskas explained.
He noted that Lithuanian experts have recorded more than 40 balloons over the country.
According to him, the scale of hybrid attacks is growing, as balloons have also been spotted in Latvia. Radars there have received more than 30 alerts.
As of this morning, six balloons have already been discovered in Lithuania. The search for the others is still ongoing.
As a reminder, earlier, Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Šakalenė stated that a Gerbera UAV had flown into the country from Belarus .
By the way, the Russian drone that crashed in Lithuania at the end of July was deliberately launched from Belarus . The purpose of the launch was not only to test the effectiveness of the air defense system, but also to create psychological pressure.
