The mystical beauty of the Carpathians: a traveler recorded an unusual phenomenon – the “Broken ghost”
In the Carpathians, a tourist recorded a rare natural phenomenon – the “Broken ghost.” Ihor Romaniv, a resident of Frankivsk, saw the optical miracle while climbing Mount Grofa.
He wrote about this on Facebook .
According to Romaniv, this was the first time in his life he had observed such an amazing natural phenomenon.

“To say that the impressions were incredible is an understatement. The weather, light, clouds, wind, sun, fog – everything changed before my eyes. When I looked at the photos at home, I couldn’t believe it, they looked as if they were taken on different days,” the man said.

He noted that the “ghost” appeared repeatedly, changing its appearance depending on the lighting and weather conditions.

“He appeared again and again, the wind and fog made each appearance different. The colors, the light, everything was constantly changing. The action lasted for more than an hour – the camera did not stop clicking,” Romaniv wrote.

The man’s testimony and photos impressed netizens. In the comments, Ukrainians expressed gratitude for the opportunity to see a unique phenomenon that rarely happens even to experienced tourists.

The “Broken Ghost” is a rare optical phenomenon that occurs in the mountains when a person sees his own shadow reflected on clouds or fog in the direction opposite to the Sun. Often the shadow is surrounded by iridescent rings – the so-called glory. It is thanks to this effect that the phenomenon seems mystical, although in fact it is explained by the laws of physics.
The name “Broken Ghost” comes from the Brocken Mountain in Germany, where the phenomenon was first described by travelers. In Ukraine, it can most often be seen in the Carpathians or the Crimean Mountains – under favorable conditions of lighting, fog, and the direction of the sun’s rays.
