The newly elected President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, shared his views on Ukraine’s prospects for joining NATO and the European Union.

This is reported by the PAP agency.

Navrotsky stated that “Ukraine cannot join NATO now” because “it is at war.” He also opposed “Ukraine’s unconditional accession to the EU,” explaining that “many countries, including Poland, have spent years meeting specific EU criteria to become members.”

The newly elected Polish leader emphasized that Poland seeks “strategic cooperation with Ukraine,” but only “on a partnership basis.” Nawrocki confirmed plans to meet President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “in an appropriate diplomatic format.”

“Ukraine, which is at war, is our neighbor, so I intend to visit all of Poland’s neighbors as president,” Nawrocki said.

When asked if he would speak with Zelenskyy, he replied: “I will certainly talk to him.”

Nawrocki added that Poland and Ukraine share many common interests and goals, but some issues remain to be resolved “in the spirit of partnership,” particularly “matters related to exhumations in Volhynia, which are important to Poles and their feelings.”

As a reminder, Ukraine allowed Poland to conduct exhumation work on Polish soldiers who died in 1939 and were buried within the borders of Lviv.

As reported, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that the election of a new president will not change the country’s foreign policy course, in particular regarding support for Ukraine and the pro-European vector.
