Amid ongoing shelling and war, Ukraine faces a renewed epidemic threat as Kyiv experiences a sharp rise in COVID-19 hospitalizations. Over the past month, the number of patients has more than quadrupled, with children accounting for a quarter of cases. Doctors urge residents to follow basic safety measures and remain vigilant about infection risks, especially when staying in shelters.

This was reported by the Kyiv City Health Department.

The institution reported a sharp increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations in Kyiv’s hospitals. As of July 1, there were only 15 patients with confirmed diagnoses, but by early August, this number had risen to 68, including 24 children.

Doctors emphasize that hospitals are not only admitting patients with mild symptoms but also those requiring constant medical supervision, oxygen support, and intensive treatment. This signals a growing spread of the virus among the population.

“We live in a time when the dominant word is ‘war.’ However, this does not eliminate other health threats. COVID-19 has not disappeared,” the department stressed.

Experts also warn that during air raids, when people are forced to stay in enclosed shelters with limited ventilation, the risk of viral infections, including COVID-19, significantly increases. Therefore, Kyiv residents are urged to wear masks and continue following basic safety measures.

Medical recommendations:

  • Wear masks in enclosed spaces, especially in shelters;

  • Wash your hands regularly or use antiseptics.

  • Stay home and consult a doctor at the first signs of a cold or respiratory infection.

“We are not scaring — we are warning,” the Department emphasized.

They also thanked Kyiv residents for their responsible attitude toward information and urged them to share these warnings with their loved ones. After all, forewarned is forearmed, especially when the enemy takes the form of a virus.

Doctors remind us that even in times of war, other threats cannot be ignored. Everyone’s health is also part of national security.

Recall that 22 countries around the world have recorded the rapid spread of a new variant of COVID-19. It has already been called “Nimbus”.

On the eve of the outbreak, it became known that health authorities in densely populated Hong Kong and Singapore warned of a sharp increase in the number of COVID-19 cases. The percentage of positive COVID-19 test results in Hong Kong in May reached its highest level in a year.

As reported, a federal court in Missouri has ruled that the People’s Republic of China is responsible for covering up the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and restricting access to protective equipment.
