Newly elected Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar arrived at the country’s parliament and was sworn in on May 9. European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have already congratulated him on his inauguration.

This is reported by Reuters.

Journalists note that Peter Magyar headed the Hungarian government after an election campaign in which he promised change amid economic stagnation and Budapest’s tense relations with allies under the previous prime minister, Viktor Orbán.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the new head of the Hungarian government and expressed her readiness to work together.

“The hope and promise of recovery is a powerful signal in these difficult times. We have important work ahead of us. We will move forward together—for Hungary and for Europe,” von der Leyen said.

European Council President António Costa also congratulated Péter Magyar on his inauguration.

“Congratulations to Peter Magyar on taking office as Prime Minister of Hungary. By a happy coincidence, you are doing this on Europe Day, when we celebrate the achievements of EU cooperation and unity,” Costa wrote.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky called Magyar’s inauguration on Europe Day symbolic and declared Ukraine’s readiness to develop cooperation with Hungary.

“Ukraine is ready to develop cooperation with Hungary and build strong relations between our countries based on good neighborliness and respect for our people,” Zelenskyy said.

He also added that Ukraine and Hungary can together strengthen their peoples and Europe as a whole.

As a reminder, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban commented on his Fidesz party’s defeat in the parliamentary elections held on April 12. He acknowledged the massive failure and said that he takes full responsibility for the result. Viktor Orban said in an interview that the election result came as a surprise to him, as he was confident of victory before the vote.

Meanwhile, the winner of Hungary’s parliamentary elections, Peter Magyar, has announced the date of his inauguration as prime minister. He said the official swearing-in ceremony will take place on May 9. On the same day, Magyar’s team will hold a public event in central Budapest.
