Journalists received an internal Pentagon letter with proposals to “punish” NATO allies who did not support the US operation against Iran.

Reuters reports this, citing an American official.

The document expresses dissatisfaction with the fact that some allies have refused to grant the US access to their airspace. Among the proposed measures is the removal of “difficult” countries from key positions in the Alliance.

The option of suspending Spain’s membership in NATO and revising the US position on Britain’s claims to the Falkland Islands were also considered.

Previously, the Donald Trump administration criticized Spain for refusing to allow the use of its bases and airspace for strikes against Iran. The United States maintains strategic facilities in the country, including the Rota Air Base and the Moron Air Base.

According to the source, such proposals are intended to send a signal to allies and “reduce the feeling of privilege” on the part of European partners. It is noted, however, that the potential suspension of Spain’s membership would have more of a symbolic effect than a military one.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that after the end of the war in Iran, the United States will reconsider its membership in the North Atlantic Alliance .

As a reminder, Trump may begin the formal process of withdrawing the United States from NATO . This decision is seen not only as a threat to allied solidarity but also as part of a domestic electoral strategy to boost his ratings.

Incidentally, former US Special Envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg spoke about the possible need to create alternative military alliances to NATO . He also suggested the possibility of the US invoking Article 13 of the Alliance to prepare for withdrawal.
