The Pentagon has allocated $400 million for Ukraine: what will the funds be used for?
The U.S. Department of Defense has contracted 99.8% of the $400 million Congress has allocated to support Ukraine. The Pentagon did this before the end of the fiscal year.
This is reported by the Washington Sun, citing Democratic Senator from Delaware Chris Coons.
The decision was made on September 29, effectively the last day before the end of the budget cycle. At that time, the Pentagon had already secured contracts for $307 million, and the remaining $93 million was to be issued by the end of the fiscal year on September 30.
Half of the amount – $200 million – is planned to be spent on weapons, ammunition and explosives.
Another $100 million will go towards transportation, spare parts, and equipment. The remaining $100 million will be allocated to services, including the transportation of military equipment.
Coons criticized the Pentagon for making the decision at the last minute. He said Congress was not informed in a timely manner and the situation indicates problems in the relationship.
“The fact that they’re finally doing it – on the last possible day, in fact – says everything you need to know about this relationship,” the senator said.
The $400 million aid package for Ukraine was approved by Congress earlier, and in June 2026, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced its allocation.
Over the following months, representatives of both parties in Congress demanded that the Pentagon contract the funds, as the delay put their use at risk.
Previously, Donald Trump’s administration made a legal commitment to spend almost all of the funding approved by Congress by the end of 2025.
As a reminder, I previously stated to the European Commission that the €90 billion loan should cover a significant part of Ukraine’s budgetary and defense needs . The assistance is designed for 2026–2027 and consists of budgetary and defense parts.
In addition, on September 18 , Ukraine received €3.3 billion from the EU for the purchase of missiles and drones .
