The Polish President congratulated Zelensky on Independence Day and mentioned problematic issues in relations

Polish President Karol Nawrocki congratulated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s restoration of independence, wished Ukrainians victory in the war against Russia, and at the same time drew attention to problematic issues in relations between Kyiv and Warsaw.

This was announced by the head of the Polish President’s Bureau of International Policy, Marcin Przydacz, in an interview with RMF24 .

According to him, Nawrocki sent Zelensky a congratulatory letter for Independence Day. In it, the Polish president noted that there remain “tensions” between the two countries that Warsaw would like to gradually resolve.

Przydacz emphasized that Poland is interested in maintaining good-neighborly relations with Ukraine. At the same time, he said, these relations should be based, among other things, on historical truth.

Contacts between the offices of the presidents of Ukraine and Poland continue, but there are no specific plans for Navrotsky’s visit to Kyiv yet.

Przydacz also criticized the initiative to create a National Pantheon of Ukraine. He believed that the decision to rebury and honor controversial historical figures could negatively impact Ukrainian-Polish relations and the perception of Ukraine in certain European countries.

Tensions between Kyiv and Warsaw have recently increased over issues of historical memory, particularly the assessment of the Volyn tragedy and the activities of the OUN and UPA. Despite these differences, both sides publicly declare the need to maintain dialogue and good neighborly relations.

As a reminder, the Consulate General of Ukraine in Wroclaw has called on Polish law enforcement to promptly and thoroughly investigate the attack on a Ukrainian couple that occurred in Wroclaw.

It was previously reported that a Ukrainian woman and her boyfriend were brutally beaten in a store in Poland. According to the victim’s mother, the attack was motivated by her Ukrainian accent. Both were injured and hospitalized.
