The price of holidays: panettone in Ukraine has risen in price to the level of social benefits

On the eve of the New Year and Christmas holidays, the capital’s supermarkets were filled with imported holiday sweets, but this year the Christmas “tradition” will hit the pockets especially hard. Price monitoring showed that some types of Italian panettone cost almost as much as the minimum pension in Ukraine.

In the premium panettone segment, price tags have reached record highs. The most expensive are elite cupcakes from the Italian manufacturer Loison, whose price has practically reached the subsistence minimum.

The highest prices on the shelves:

Loison panettone with chocolate drops and cream, 1 kg — 2399 UAH

Loison with raisins and candied citrus, 1 kg — 2199 UAH

Loison with chocolate and candied pears, 750 g in an iron box — 1999 UAH

Loison salted caramel, 750 g — UAH 1,999

Loison Gran Cacao, 1 kg — 939 UAH with a 15% discount (1099 UAH without discount)

For comparison: the minimum pension is 2361 UAH.
That is, a kilogram of elite panettone is 38 UAH more expensive than a pension.

Even with discounts, imported Christmas cupcakes remain a product “not for everyone.”

Balocco panettone, 750 g — 849 UAH (999 UAH without discount)

Loison Gran Cacao, 1 kg — 939 UAH (1099 UAH without discount)

Balocco with gianduja cream, 800 g — 599 UAH (699 UAH without discount)

Balocco chocolate with filling, 650 g — 429 UAH (499 UAH without discount)

Even promotional prices remain high for most buyers.

In contrast to elite Italian pastries, Ukrainian stollen looks extremely budget-friendly.
Its price: 0.5 kg — 274.50 UAH, which is 7–8 times cheaper than premium panettone.

Christmas baking in Ukraine this year has become an indicator of social contrast: while imported cupcakes cost the same as the minimum pension, Ukrainian stollen remains almost the only available holiday alternative.
