The Verkhovna Rada plans to prepare a submission to the Constitutional Court of Ukraine with the aim of repealing Law No. 12414, which limits the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO).

This was reported by People’s Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak.

According to him, there have already been cases in Ukrainian practice when the Constitutional Court overturned laws due to violations during their adoption.

“Here, the authorities led him through the hall in the dirtiest way possible, so there is a lot of material,” Zheleznyak noted.

In order for the appeal to the Constitutional Court to take place, it is necessary to collect signatures of 45 people’s deputies. According to Zheleznyak, this will not be an easy task.

On Tuesday, July 22, the Verkhovna Rada voted for a bill that significantly limits the powers of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO), effectively subordinating their activities to the Prosecutor General. Subsequently, the heads of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the SAPO appealed to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy not to sign the bill , which, in their opinion, destroys the independence of these bodies.

Let us recall that the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office have published an official statement on draft law No. 12414, which is being prepared for the second reading in the Verkhovna Rada. The anti-corruption agencies warn that the latest amendments to the document pose a serious threat to the independence of their activities.
