On September 17, the Verkhovna Rada supported in the first reading a bill that provides for strengthening parliamentary control over law enforcement agencies and the prosecutor’s office. Document No. 14130 was supported by 240 people’s deputies.

This was reported by the press service of the Verkhovna Rada.

The draft law provides for amendments to a number of laws to strengthen parliamentary control and introduce additional oversight mechanisms.

In particular, it is proposed to supplement the law “On the State Bureau of Investigation” with a requirement for the Director of the State Bureau of Investigation to separately highlight in the annual report to parliament information on investigations into cases of torture and ill-treatment of people, as well as measures to protect victims.

The same requirement will apply to the annual report of the Prosecutor General, which is submitted to the Verkhovna Rada.

In addition, the bill proposes to amend the law “On Committees of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.” This will allow the parliamentary committee to consider reports from the leadership of the National Police on current issues and high-profile events at closed meetings.
