A large-scale inspection of water, electricity, and heat supply sources began in Lviv on Saturday, October 11. For the first time in the city, testing will cover all districts simultaneously.
This was announced by Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi.
“Winter can be difficult. Tonight’s night in Kyiv proved it once again. Starting tomorrow, we are putting Lviv into testing mode. We have to check all our resources, mechanisms, support, and efficiency. We do this every year, but for the first time simultaneously throughout the city,” he wrote.
According to Sadovoy, traffic lights in the city will be disconnected from the main power supply and transferred to the backup one to ensure their operation during a possible blackout. The mayor noted that 97% of traffic lights can function autonomously.
In addition, the city will test alternative water supplies, and check gas supply, communications, electricity, and public transportation systems.
“In 18 schools in Lviv, where there are solid fuel boilers, heating will be provided by them. Such boilers are also available in some hospitals,” the mayor added.
The city has also raised a register of all installed furnaces to check their technical condition. Sadovy explained that they cannot provide full heating at the moment due to the lack of gas limits.
“Plus, we raised a register of all those stoves that were once installed in houses – remember that wave in 22-23, when stoves and firewood were installed in shelters. We have to test it all now so that it is all in working order. Because the situation can change at any second,” says Sadovy.
“As for heating, it’s really cold. But now the situation in the country is such that we won’t be able to provide heating for the next few weeks. We need to wait a little longer to do everything right – so that it’s warm in the winter,” Sadovyi added.
The mayor noted that Lviv needs 18 million cubic meters of gas for October, but there are only 8 million. Therefore, heat has currently been supplied only to schools, kindergartens, and hospitals.
“Well, 350 thousand Lviv residents have individual heating, their situation is a little simpler. As for CHP-1 and CHP-2, there are no limits yet, we cannot run them at full capacity,” the mayor explained.
The city authorities ask Lviv residents to be understanding of possible temporary inconveniences and take care of themselves in advance.
In addition, Volodymyr Omelchenko, Director of Energy and Infrastructure Programs at the Razumkov Center, reported that there is a serious threat of disruption of the heating season in certain regions in Ukraine due to massive Russian shelling of energy infrastructure.
