The Russian army is gradually advancing towards Konstantinovka, which is currently one of the key strongholds in the east. Analysts believe that the fall of the city is only a matter of time.
Reuters reports this.
The publication notes that fighting is already taking place on the outskirts of the city. Small groups of Russian soldiers are trying to penetrate into Konstantinovka.
Experts say the attack on the city highlights the Kremlin’s superiority in manpower, despite Ukraine’s successes in delivering long-range strikes.
“The effect of medium-range strikes has not been great enough to force the Russians to halt their offensive. So, despite Russia suffering increasingly heavy losses in the rear, it is still able to continue the offensive, at least in certain areas,” says Emil Kastehelmi of the Finnish think tank Black Bird.
Experts warn that the capture of Konstantinovka will create a springboard for the Russian Federation for a further offensive to the north.
Last week, Vladimir Putin said the Russian army was close to capturing the city. However, in a comment to Reuters, the Ukrainian military dismissed these claims as exaggeration and stressed that their units were destroying small groups of occupiers who managed to penetrate the city.
Major General Viktor Nikolyuk, commander of the Donetsk OTU, also stated that Kostyantynivka can be held at the current pace of defense, given the number of personnel and available resources.
ISW experts note that although the tactical situation for Ukraine has worsened, they do not currently predict a breakthrough by Russian troops.
At the same time, the Russian army’s constant attempts to surround the city are increasing the cost of its defense for Ukraine.
“We will have to make a choice: either raise the stakes or retreat. And now the situation is such that the stakes are rising every day,” says Ukrainian analyst Ruslan Mikula from the DeepState group.
It is also known that Ukrainian logistical routes are under constant attack by Russian forces. Artillery, drones and guided bombs are attacking infrastructure along the road north of Kostyantynivka, according to military personnel stationed in the area.
“The route is too dangerous to evacuate the dead and wounded using conventional vehicles. Everything is done on foot,” said 34-year-old serviceman Oleksandr Kosmin.
It was previously reported thatthe Russian army is continuing its offensive in the Donetsk region and is trying to reach Kostyantynivka . At the same time, the Kremlin’s statements about significant successes on this front do not correspond to the real situation.
