The Russian Olympic Committee has been reinstated: the IOC has adopted a new decision

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has temporarily reinstated the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC). The ban on its activities had been in effect since October 12, 2023.

This was reported by the IOC press service.

By its decision, the IOC canceled the recommendations of March 28, 2023, according to which Russian athletes were to compete under a neutral flag.

The committee noted that from now on, each international sports federation will independently make decisions on whether to allow or disallow Russian athletes to participate in international competitions, without referring to the IOC’s recommendations.

In particular, the IOC Executive Board adopted the following decisions:

• • temporarily lifted the disqualification of the Russian Olympic Committee;

• • The ROC no longer includes any regional sports organizations in the territories under the jurisdiction of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine;

• • recommendations regarding the participation of Russian athletes and teams, including protective measures, no longer apply;

• • all Russian athletes returning to international competition must comply with current anti-doping requirements;

• • The IOC will not hold its events on Russian territory and will not invite representatives of the Russian authorities to them;

• • The decision on the use of the Russian flag, anthem, colors and other state symbols at the Olympic Games will be made later.

In particular, the IOC explained that the decision was made after a legal analysis in connection with the start of the qualification period for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games. This became possible after the IOC excluded regional sports organizations located in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine from its membership and confirmed that it would no longer carry out its activities there.

It was previously reported that the International Aquatics Federation allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete without restrictions – with national symbols and on equal terms with representatives of other countries.
