The Sea of Azov is under threat: the occupiers are preparing to catch hundreds of thousands of tons of jellyfish

The Russian occupation authorities are preparing a large-scale jellyfish catch in the Sea of Azov, which could affect the ecosystem.

This is reported by the Center for National Resistance.

According to underground sources, the Russians, together with Rosrybolovstvo, plan to conduct an experiment on mass catching jellyfish in 2026. Formally, this is explained by concern for the holiday season, but Ukrainian sources believe that this is another intervention in the natural balance for the sake of profit.

The occupiers plan to process some of the caught jellyfish into gelatin and collagen, and destroy the rest. The experiment may begin as early as July 2026 in resort areas, and if successful, scale it up.

The plans are also partially confirmed by Russian official sources. Back in 2025, the Federal Agency for Fisheries announced the preparation of a program to “reduce the negative impact of jellyfish” and test special nets for catching them.

In addition, the documents for 2026 already include a recommended volume of jellyfish catch – 741 thousand tons.

The CNS emphasizes: “Jellyfish are an important part of the marine ecosystem, as they inhibit the reproduction of plankton and affect the balance of the food chain.”

They warn that mass fishing could lead to water “blooming”, a drop in oxygen levels, and depletion of fish resources.

Against this background, Ukrainian sources are already recording changes in the Sea of Azov. In particular, the salinity of the water is increasing, which affects fish and the conditions for their spawning.

As a reminder, the third large-scale oil spill since the beginning of the year has been recorded in the Black Sea, which has already caused a mass death of birds.
