As the US military operation against Iran enters its third week, allies are pressing US President Donald Trump to clarify the goals and timeline for ending the conflict. At the same time, the White House is not providing allies with detailed information about further war plans, according to sources.
This is reported by Bloomberg .
According to the agency, during a recent telephone conversation of the leaders of the G7 countries, European leaders repeatedly asked Donald Trump about his ultimate goal in the war against Iran.
During this conversation, the US president stated that he could not discuss military objectives over the phone, but noted that he was considering several options for the development of events and wanted the conflict to end as soon as possible.
Trump’s latest statements have raised concerns among US allies. According to journalists, none of the countries are ready to support his call to participate in opening the blocked Strait of Hormuz.
A White House spokesman explained that the US operation is aimed at weakening Iran’s military capabilities.
According to him, Washington’s main goals are:
- destruction of Iran’s missile forces;
- the destruction of Iran’s navy;
- preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons;
- cessation of funding by the Iranian authorities of proxy groups in other countries.
The White House noted that the operation will continue until Donald Trump determines that the objectives have been achieved.
At the same time, some European officials believe that the current increase in US military activity may be the peak of the campaign.
They say Trump’s claims about destroying Iran’s military capabilities could be the basis for declaring the operation over. A senior Gulf official warned that ending the war could depend on the situation in energy markets.
“Ultimately, only a sustained rise in oil prices will force Trump to end the war and declare victory,” he said.
Signs of tension are also being seen within the US president’s political team. David Sachs, the White House’s head of artificial intelligence and cryptocurrencies, has called for an end to the conflict.
“Now is the time to declare victory and exit the conflict, and that is certainly what the markets would like to see,” said David Sachs.
Analyst and former official in the administration of US President Barack Obama, Wali Nasr, said that the conflict could drag on.
“Trump hoped it would be a very quick war. Now this war is out of his control. It is lasting longer, becoming more complicated and costly,” said Wali Nasr.
According to the agency’s sources, some Gulf countries also claim to have limited information about further US actions and express dissatisfaction with the fact that the military operation was launched without meaningful consultations. At the same time, several states in the region are considering diplomatic channels to reduce tensions and stabilize shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Among them: Oman, Saudi Arabia, Turkey.
At the same time, according to journalists, Iran is demanding compensation for the damage caused and guarantees of non-aggression, which may not be acceptable to the White House. Earlier, Donald Trump said that the United States has already won the war with Iran.
“Let me tell you, we won. You know, you never want to talk about victory too soon. We won,” the US president said.
It was previously reported that Iran has blocked the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf , a key route for oil supplies from the Middle East. The movement of oil tankers in the strait has been effectively halted, and ships have reduced their speed to zero.
As is known, in his first statement, the new leader of Iran emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed . According to him, this is pressure on Israel and the United States.
As a reminder, French President Emmanuel Macron announced an upcoming mission to gradually restore shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
