In December, Ukrainians will be able to see one of the brightest meteor showers of the year – the Geminid meteor shower, which peaks on the night of December 13-14.

This is reported by Space.com.

The Geminids are active from December 4 to 20, but the most spectacular spectacle is expected on the night of the peak. At this time, the number of “shooting stars” can reach 40-50 per hour, and under ideal conditions – even up to 150.

NASA explains that the meteor shower occurs when Earth passes through a trail of debris left behind by the unusual blue asteroid 3200 Phaethon. The particles crash into the atmosphere at super-high speeds and ignite, creating bright trails in the sky.

The best time to see the Geminids is after 10:00 PM on the night of the peak, when the sky is dark and the Moon is out of the way. Most meteors have a soft yellowish hue and are easily visible to the naked eye.

Astronomers advise finding the star Castor in the constellation Gemini in the sky using a mobile application before starting observations – it is from this area that meteors appear.

As previously reported, on December 9, geomagnetic activity increased significantly: the magnetic storm reached the red level with a K-index of 6.7.
