The decision of the US Department of Defense to stop sending certain types of weapons to Ukraine without warning came as a surprise not only to American diplomats, but also to congressmen, who usually have access to such information.
This is stated in the publication of Politico.
The initiator of the suspension is said to be Elbridge Colby, who heads the Pentagon’s policy division. Together with a small group of advisers, he expressed concern about the depletion of critical weapons stocks in the United States, which became the basis for the delay in deliveries.
A number of Republican politicians, including supporters of Donald Trump, have reacted negatively to these actions. They claim that the decision was made behind the scenes – without discussion with other representatives of the administration.
Congressman Michael McCaul said the responsibility for the suspension lies with Colby, and highlighted a lack of proper coordination within the White House. He also expressed doubts about whether Marco Rubio, who is acting national security adviser after Mike Walz was fired, was informed.
One of the officials confirmed that the delay was not coordinated with the State Department. Two other sources said that neither the State Department, the US Embassy in Kyiv, nor representatives of Keith Kellogg’s special forces were consulted before the recall of the weapons shipment that had already been delivered to Poland.
In addition, some officers from the Joint Chiefs of Staff also opposed the move, according to senior officials familiar with the discussions.
Despite this, the State Department and the White House deny that the Pentagon’s decision caught them by surprise.
As a reminder, the United States of America temporarily suspended the supply of some anti-aircraft missiles and precision ammunition to Ukraine due to concerns about the level of its own defense reserves.
As reported, after reports of the suspension of the supply of part of military aid to Ukraine, the Pentagon assures that Washington continues to work on solutions.
By the way, the US State Department assured that they did not stop all arms supplies to Ukraine, and the Pentagon’s decision made the day before was just one situation.
As is known, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the US’s temporary suspension of military aid to Ukraine, in his opinion, supposedly brings the end of the war closer.
