On Wednesday, January 21, the Earth was hit by a powerful red-level magnetic storm, which could last up to two days and have a significant impact on people’s well-being. According to experts, the geomagnetic storm reached a K-index of 7.3 out of a possible 9, which corresponds to a high level of danger.

According to data from Meteoagent and the British Geological Survey, the cause of the storm was a coronal mass ejection on the Sun, recorded on January 18. As a result, the Earth entered a so-called magnetic cloud, which caused the conditions of a G4 class geomagnetic storm.

Experts say that increased solar activity can last from 24 to 48 hours. This is facilitated by the negative orientation of the interplanetary magnetic field and the extremely high speed of the solar wind – about 950 km/s.

Powerful magnetic storms are most often experienced by weather-dependent people, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with chronic diseases. During such periods, experts advise reducing physical activity, following a sleep schedule, drinking more water, avoiding stress and heavy meals, and spending more time outdoors.
