The evolutionary path of the Solar System will end with its destruction – in five billion years, the star will be destroyed and leave behind a shell of gas and dust.

This was reported by the Daily Mail.

Scientists are now focusing on the Helix Nebula, the remnant of a Sun-like star located 650 light-years from Earth that ran out of fuel thousands of years ago.

According to astronomers, the structures inside the ring of gas in the nebula will help to get “an idea of the future fate of the Earth.”

At the center of the Helix is a core called a white dwarf. The radiation from this core in the center of the nebula illuminates the envelope of gas, allowing us to see the details of the stellar transformation.

“Stars like our Sun can remain in this stable ‘main sequence’ phase for billions of years because they operate on vast reserves of atomic hydrogen,” the article says.

At the same time, as hydrogen runs out, the outer layers of the star will begin to collapse inward, the pressure from the release will create intense heat that can fuse helium atoms into carbon, and there will also be a burst of energy that will trigger nuclear fusion in the outer layers of the Sun, expanding it.

Due to the star’s inflation, the Earth will either evaporate from the intense heat or be torn to pieces.

However, according to Professor Janet Drew, an astronomer at University College London, this process is not about destruction but about creation. In this way, the Earth can provide the raw materials needed for the next generation of life to emerge.
