The threat of nuclear terrorism: how nuclear power plants are protected from Russian attacks

Russia avoids direct strikes on reactors, focusing on Ukrenergo’s hub substations, which supply power to the nuclear power plant. This strategy is explained by the enemy’s fear of a harsh international response to open nuclear terrorism.

Thus, on the air of “Pryamoy”, the former head of “Ukrenergo” Volodymyr Kudrytskyi commented on the threats to Ukrainian nuclear power plants.

“These substations are quite well fortified against mortars. You know that there is a program to protect transformers and there are shelters at all these substations, huge concrete shelters over the transformers that can withstand mortar hits and sometimes even withstand rocket hits,” he noted.

Kudrytsky explained that it is thanks to concrete protective structures that the speed of restoration of facilities has increased significantly. If a complete replacement of a destroyed transformer takes about a month, then protected facilities can be put into operation in a matter of hours or days. Kudrytsky is confident that power engineers are ready for such scenarios, since this experience has been practiced repeatedly.

In addition, the former head of Ukrenergo reassured Ukrainians about the risks of a long-term power outage across the country. He noted that apocalyptic predictions that are spreading on social networks often have no real basis. Even in conditions of severe frosts and massive attacks, Ukrainian engineers demonstrate an exceptional ability to restore the network, – emphasized Volodymyr Kudrytsky.

As a reminder, the President of Ukraine and the State Security Service of Ukraine have stated the threat of Russia preparing strikes on substations related to nuclear power plants. If such attacks are carried out, this could cause both a complete blackout and extremely dangerous consequences.

According to military radio technology consultant Sergey “Flash” Beskrestnov, nuclear power plants are currently the only stable sources of electricity generation in Ukraine. That is why, if Russia seeks to completely cut off the country’s electricity supply, it may focus on attacks on nuclear power plant-related facilities.
