In Lublin, Poland, the Ukrainian flag was removed from the city council building following President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decision to grant one of the Special Operations Forces units the honorary title “Heroes of the UPA.”
The Polish publication WP Wiadomości writes about this.
The Lublin City Council stated that naming a Ukrainian military unit after the UPA had provoked a negative reaction, as they believed it violated Polish historical memory and complicated dialogue between the two nations.
“Following the example of other Polish cities, we have decided to remove the Ukrainian flag from the Lublin City Hall. We share the critical position of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Polish Embassy in Kyiv regarding President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decision,” the city administration noted.
The mayor’s office emphasized that its support for Ukraine’s struggle for independence and territorial integrity remains unchanged.
“We see no contradiction between defending historical truth and solidarity with the people who have become victims of unjustified aggression,” city officials said.
The Ukrainian flag was installed on the Lublin Town Hall building in 2022, alongside the flags of Poland and the European Union.
As a reminder, on May 26, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree granting the Separate Special Operations Center “North” of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Special Operations Forces the honorary title “Named After the Heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.” The document states that this decision was made in order to restore the historical traditions of the Ukrainian army.

As a reminder, Polish President Karol Nawrocki wants to strip Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Poland’s highest state award, the Order of the White Eagle, following his decision to name an elite Ukrainian special forces unit the Heroes of the UPA .
The decree issued by the head of state noted that this was done with the aim of restoring the historical traditions of the national army and taking into account the unit’s exemplary performance of combat missions in defending the territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine.
This decision provoked discontent within the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On May 28, Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki met with Ukrainian Ambassador Vasyl Bodnar, during which they voiced their protest and emphasized the sensitivity of this move for Polish society.
